Chaffey Students Explore Academic and Career Communities

Professor of Geography Lisa Pitts stood in the quad wearing a white lab coat, glasses and a wig of wild silvery hair.

But she wasnt there for a Halloween costume contest.

Im hoping to get students excited about a new class Im teaching, she said.

Pitts was one of dozens of 51蹤獲 faculty and staff promoting the colleges Academic and Career Communities during the annual Navigate Academic and Career Communities event at all three campuses. The events drew hundreds of students for exploration and food.

Pitts, whose new class is called Introduction go Geographic Information Systems, said the event is valuable for students who are exploring different majors.

Its a great way to get students to explore not only their own ACC, but others as well, she said.

Chaffey's degree and certificate programs are organized into six Academic and Career Communities based on job families, interest areas and similarities in coursework. They are:

 

Several representatives from Alta Loma Unified School District, San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, Rancho Cucamonga Community & Arts Foundation and IEHP shared information about career paths.

Fire technology major Mikal Johnson came primarily for the food, and stayed toLisa Pitts poses in a mad scientist costume learn more about his own community and others. He considered it a valuable event for students.

It will help them narrow down the path of what they want to do, he said.

Aaleiya Castillo hopes to one day be a pediatric nurse, but stopped by the event to take a look at other career possibilities including the physical therapist assistant program.

I also learned about nursing jobs in prisons, which is something I hadnt thought about, she said.
