Community Health Worker
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are frontline health workers who are trusted members of their community. The Community Health Worker program trains students to work in the field of public health, healthcare, and social services. CHWs provide a wide-range of community services including: care coordination, screening, contact tracing, and other care support activities. CHWs may also provide, health education, informal counseling, social support, outreach, and advocacy. CHWs work to address the social determinants of health, and promote health equity and social justice within the community they serve.

Applications open each year in April and close in August. You can apply directly through the CHW Program website. While attending an information session is not required, it is strongly recommended to help you better understand the program and the application process.
Information sessions begin in April and are held online via Zoom, typically in the evenings. Sessions dates and Zoom links will be posted on the website in March, so be sure to check back for updates.
The CHW Program does not have any formal prerequisites. However, applicants are encouraged to have a strong interest in working with and supporting their community, as this focus is central to the program’s goals.
The program accepts 30 students per cohort each year. Admission is based on a first-come, first-served basis, so early application is encouraged.
Yes, the fall semester of the CHW Program is considered a full-time course load (12-units). If you are unable to commit to full-time, please contact the Program Facilitator to discuss potential part-time options.

Financial Aid may cover the cost of the program if you are pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Public Health. If you are not a Public Health major, please contact the Program Facilitator to explore available financial aid options.
Yes, students must be at least 16 years old to participate in the CHW Program. This age requirement is necessary to complete the internship component, which is a program requirement. If you are between 16 and 18 years old, please note that the internship involves 120 hours over one semester, and most internship sites operate during standard business hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Be sure to consider your availability before applying.
