Infection Control Course

Overview

An entry-level, unlicensed dental assistant is required by the Dental Board of California to successfully complete an 8-hour Infection Control course specifically designed for unlicensed dental assistants.

Under SB 1543, Section 1750, the Dental Board of California requires all unlicensed dental assistants—including sterilization assistants—to complete a Board-approved 8-hour Infection Control course before performing any basic supportive dental procedures that involve potential exposure to blood, saliva, or other infectious materials.

This course is offered as a non-credit hybrid course, combining didactic instruction delivered online via Canvas, with on-campus laboratory activities and assessments to fulfill the requirements for certification.

Course being offered via hybrid starting 10/13/2025 through 10/25/2025 with in-person laboratory activities and assessments on 10/25/2025 8:00 a.m. to 5:05.  p.m. 

Course Description 

This 8-hour certification course, approved by the Dental Board, is designed to meet the legal requirements for unlicensed dental assistants to work or volunteer in a dental office. The course is also designed to meet the minimum requirements for the 8-hour infection control course as mandated by the California Board of Dental Examiners and Cal-DOSH, in compliance with B&P Section 1756(b). Offered by 51ÂÜÀò through a hybrid learning model, the course combines online didactic instruction with an assessment and on-campus hands-on laboratory activities to earn certification. Students will develop the foundational competencies necessary to implement infection control protocols effectively and safely in a dental practice. Topics covered include the infectious disease process, microbiology, and methods of disease transmission, along with practical applications of disinfection and sterilization techniques. Emphasis is placed on compliance with OSHA standards, workplace ergonomics, dental waterline maintenance, and proper waste management.

Conditions of Enrollment 

Students must provide proof of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the first week of class to remain enrolled. 

Required Course Materials 

  • Evidence of (copy) current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 
  • Access to computer with internet to complete online portion of course in Canvas.
  • Scrubs or Clinical Staff Attire
